Is this a scary game?

From the very beginning of the game, there was no text and numbers on the health and force field panels. I thought it was because of the choice of high difficulty, but nothing happened after changing the difficulty. I tried to turn everything on and off in the settings. It didn't help. There is simply no text and numbers on the red and blue stripes. How do I turn it on?...

I remember early on with this game that even if you got a better sidearm you were forced to carry a generic common quality starter handgun anyway. Did they ever let you replace the starter sidearm with one you can find later? Or was my memory suffering a warp-damned Mandela effect?...
